Kids to Kids, a program of Spread the Word Nevada, promotes literacy
and makes it possible for all of Nevada's children to experience the
magic of books. This not-for-profit organization distributes books
to students in 12 elementary schools, and to-date has distributed
about 600,000 books to more than 50,000 children.

A key aspect is that the program puts books into the homes of
youngsters and gives them the means to develop their own
personal home libraries. In far too many cases, the books
are the first many of these at-risk children have ever
owned.
Kids to Kids was named “Outstanding Charity of the Year” for
2005 by The Nevada Community Foundation.
This prestigious award recognizes nonprofits that demonstrate
both exceptional stewardship of their donors’ resources and
a high level of effectiveness in addressing community
issues. |
Their programs are imaginative and
varied. In the “Books From Badges” program, they work with local law
enforcement agencies to distribute books to children in
neighborhoods with high crimes rates. Officers hand out books from
their patrol cars, and make books available in the lobbies of their
stations.
In “Breakfast with Books,” books are distributed to families in need
at events featuring the chance for children and parents to select
books together. The program increases awareness of reading as a
family activity. |
