The Jabbawockeez founding members are Kevin Brewer (called KB) and Joe Larot (Punkee) and two other original members are Rynan Paguio and Jeff Nguyen. The original Jabbawockeez was a fledgling dance crew from Southern California but quickly gained traction when they auditioned for MTV's "America's Best Dance Crew," then opened for New Kids on the Block on tour--it was the beginning of something big and new, the first time a dance crew performed without facial gestures, behind a mask, which the dance crew says is symbolic of "universality" and "acceptance". Soon after New Kids on the Block, Jabbawockeez was asked to be performers at David Copperfield's show at MGM Grand Las Vegas while he took time off.
The Jabbawockeez mask is a symbolic of "universality" and "acceptance" by the original members. Their desire for untiy is expressed to this day through their engagement in political and social issues affecting people of all walks of life. In a recent New York Times article, Kevin Brewer describes the tug he's felt with the Jabbawockeez mask: "I do feel this wrestling, where we do have this platform, and I do want to say something to show support for the people, right? But at the same time, the weight of it and how big it is, if I take my mask off and say the wrong thing, and somebody's like, 'Hey, you just said the wrong thing, Jabbawockeez going down' — I don't want to jeopardize anything." In the end, the enduring challenge encountered by Jabbawockeez has always been to keep or remove the mask--to show their faces--quite powerful parallels to our present.
"It started off kind of slow for me but as it went on it kept getting better and better. These guys ...I assume...have for the moves and we got to take pictures with them which was a thrill for me." - Vegas.com
Jabbawockeez is a hip-hop dance group originally from San Diego, California consisting of hip hop dancers who together created a new, innovative dance crew and participated in competitions throughout the US. The group rose to prominence in 2008 by winning the first season of Randy Jackson Presents America's Best Dance Crew. You might wonder how the name Jabbawockeez came about since it's pretty unusual. It's derived from the famous Lewis Carroll's poem Jabberwocky. Jabbawockeez now performes live at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Show times are 7:30PM and 9:30PM at the Jabbawockeez Theater. All ages are welcome.
The Jabbawockeez show is a 70 minute performance but arrive about 30 minutes early in case there's a line to enter the theater. Expect an action-packed and intense 70 minutes that'll well worth the ticket price.
