It's Vegas Golden Knights, not Las Vegas Golden Knights

Why? Because, that's why. That may sound snarky, but even the most casual hockey fan will tell you this is par for the course in the NHL and the best thing to do is just go with it. Expect every TV host calling a game to slip up multiple times throughout the season. You can even make a game out of it!

(For the non-NHL fans or the uninitiated, this is a real thing hockey fans do. We still count every time announcers say 'Phoenix Coyotes' instead of 'Arizona Coyotes,' and a fan-run Coyotes blog even turned it into a charitable initiative.)

The name 'Golden Knights' won out over Desert Knights and Silver Knights.

Owner Bill Foley originally wanted to call the team Black Knights as a tribute to the Army Black Knights at his alma mater the United States Military Academy. However, due to trademark issues, they eventually settled on Golden Knights.

They're the First Pro Sports Team in Town

It may seem hard to believe that a city with the size and international influence of Las Vegas wouldn't have any major-league teams, but aside from a healthy college sports scene and some AAA baseball, none of the so-called Big Four (NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL) have taken the plunge until now.

They Currently Have One Player?

On March 6, 2017, Reid Duke became the first player to sign with the Golden Knights.

Wait, WHO?!

The 21-year- old forward was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the sixth round of the 2014 draft. He's spent the past five seasons playing major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League up in his native Canada. He's currently playing in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, having been sent there as part of his three-year entry-level deal with the Golden Knights.

Their Full Roster is the Most Speculated About in the League

What does a new NHL franchise mean for the other 30? It means expansion draft time, something the league hasn't seen since 2000, and it means the Golden Knights will be able to pick their players from the existing rosters of the other teams. Each of the current teams has to submit a list of players they wish to protect from the expansion draft and which players will be vulnerable. Everyone in the hockey world, from mainstream media to the blogosphere to casual fans to diehards, has opinions about who should stay and who should go to Vegas, and the takes have never been hotter! The expansion draft will take place on June 18-20, with the results announced on June 21.

The Golden Knights Will Have an Almost Brand-New Arena

T-Mobile Arena opened on April 6, 2016, so the Golden Knights will have a state-of- the-art facility to call home. While it's a multipurpose venue, it was designed with the understanding that an NHL team might come to Las Vegas, and so it will be able to hold 17,500 fans during games.

Their Games Will Be Fun for Everyone

This, right here, is one of the coolest things about the NHL. The in-arena fan experience is great for all ages, and all around the league teams have gone out of their way to make game days 100% family friendly. While we don't know specifics yet, rest assured that the concourse will have free activities for kids to enjoy during intermissions, the pro shops will be stocked with child-sized merchandise, and the concessions stands will have plenty of menu choices for the fussiest young stomachs.
