Shark Reef Las Vegas

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay offers 14 exhibits containing 1,200 species of exotic and endangered fish, reptiles and — of course — sharks. Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is home in the dusty desert that is Las Vegas serves as a contrast but also shows the commitment the Strip has to entertainment and conservation.

At Shark Reef you'll enjoy up-close views of more than 100 sharks, including 30 in the 1.3 million-gallon (4.9 million-liter) main tank, one of the largest in the US. By walking through two underwater tunnels, get an even better sense of what it's like to be under the sea.

Shark Reef is reminiscent of an ancient temple slowly sinking into the ocean. The tunnel, which houses five species of sharks and the aquarium's largest animals, is designed to look like a sunken shipwreck. Here, visitors can witness a scuba diver's view of these mesmerizing creatures, including nurse sharks and tiger-striped sharks measuring up to nine feet long, and two tiger sharks that measure more than six feet in length.

When divers swim in to clean these tanks, they wear a stainless steel mesh, similar to what knights wore long ago. The metal helps keep the animals away so the humans don't look like food.

In addition to the shark tunnel, guests can experience exhibits featuring crocodiles, freshwater fish, piranhas and much more.

For those who want an in-depth, personal enrichment about the animals, audio wands are available in Spanish, English and Japanese. In addition, Shark Reef's naturalists are available to answer any questions visitors may have.

What to do at Shark Reef

We enjoyed the shark reef. My 3 kids, ages 5-10, LOVED the touch pool. They could have stayed there all day. This, for me, made it worth the price. The sharks are small but still cool to see. I don't know that older kids would be too impressed with it though.
